David Bergen is a sought-after information technology consultant at San Francisco firm Alvarez and Marsal. Prior to entering consulting, David Bergen distinguished himself as a chief information officer (CIO) at several companies, including Duty Free Shoppers and Levi Strauss. After successfully implementing IT solutions for The Gap and its subsidiaries, David Bergen began working as a CIO in 1998 for Duty Free Shoppers, a global retailer with over 150 stores in 9 countries. At Duty Free Shoppers, David Bergen led a team of over 250 employees at 9 locations worldwide and managed a budget exceeding $70 million. David Bergen’s contributions to Duty Free Shoppers included redesigning the company’s IT infrastructure and developing procedures to simplify the maintenance and management of the Duty Free Shoppers’ technological network. Through this work, David Bergen created a global network of shared services to be used by each of the company’s locations. Furthermore, David Bergen spearheaded the development of Duty Free Shoppers’ Sephora.com online retailer. Following this position, David Bergen was appointed Senior Vice President and CIO at CarStation.com in 2000. At this business-to-business auto-parts supplier, David Bergen designed a Java-based e-commerce platform based on a redundant, industrial-strength infrastructure that ensured that the company’s IT network was available 100 percent of the time. Subsequently, David Bergen took on the position of Global CIO at Levi Strauss, during a period of particular difficulty for the company. David Bergen was responsible for modernizing and networking Levi Strauss’ diffuse, regional IT infrastructure, resulting in IT overhead savings of 30 percent and an increase in productivity. Additionally, as a result of David Bergen’s initiatives, Levi Strauss’ supply chain was able to handle the demands of large retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target. With this modernized infrastructure in place, Levi Strauss was able to regain market share and reach new customers. As of 2009, David Bergen has been working as a management consultant. Initially hired by T-Mobile to rejuvenate its IT strategy, David Bergen now works for consultancy firm Alvarez and Marsal, where he provides advice and coaching to the CEOs and boards of major corporations.
